Dr Mohammed Belal’s Inspirational Return to Surgery After Paralysis

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Two years ago, Dr. Mohammed Belal, a Urology Consultant Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), faced an unimaginable challenge. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was involved in a freak cycling accident that left him paralysed from the waist down. What followed was a long and difficult recovery, but instead of letting his disability end his career, Dr. Belal has made history by returning to the operating theatre—becoming the first paralysed medic in the UK to perform surgery. His return is a powerful story of resilience, innovation, and the incredible support of both his colleagues and the NHS.

After his accident, Dr. Belal was determined not to let his injury stop him from doing the work he loved. With the backing of UHB and NHS staff, he was able to return to surgery, thanks to a specially adapted hydraulic electric wheelchair that allows him to stand and lean forward during procedures. This technology was essential in helping him maintain the posture needed for surgery. As he shared in a recent post: “It’s only been possible because of the amazing support and accommodations of my disability by University Hospitals Birmingham, the NHS, and my colleagues.”

But Dr. Belal’s journey goes beyond just physical recovery—it has deeply influenced how he views patient care. Experiencing the healthcare system from the patient’s perspective has given him valuable insight into the challenges many people face. “Coming back with a disability has given me a better understanding of patient experience,” he said. His newfound empathy has opened up deeper conversations with both patients and colleagues, making him an even more compassionate doctor.

Dr. Belal also highlighted the importance of diversity in healthcare, stressing that the NHS benefits from a workforce that brings a variety of experiences and perspectives. “Diversity, in both background and experience, makes the NHS a richer and enriching place,” he explained. His journey is a reminder that inclusivity within the workplace, especially in healthcare, is essential—not just for staff, but for the patients who rely on their care.

Dr. Belal’s return to surgery is truly inspiring. It is testament to the power of innovation, the support of a compassionate team, and the strength of the human spirit. His story proves that, with the right support, challenges can be overcome, and lives—both patients’ and healthcare professionals’—can be changed. Dr. Belal’s resilience, along with the NHS’s commitment to an inclusive and diverse workforce, shows how we can all continue to grow, no matter the obstacles we face.
