Limb Loss and Limb Difference awareness month brings attention to those living with limb differences or have suffered limb loss. Living with limb loss and limb difference presents unique challenges but there are a network of charities, healthcare and legal professionals who work conscientiously to support these individuals. The awareness month works to create a dialogue about disability, inclusion and human potential. Limb Loss & Limb Difference UK work with various charities who support amputees or those with congenital limb differences. They also support this awareness month to empower those within the community. It is important to raise awareness as people with limb disabilities are often in a constant and uphill battle with society. Limb Loss and Limb Difference UK state “the only way we can begin to work towards an inclusive world is to raise awareness, inform, educate and start a conversation. Our goals include reducing isolation and loneliness whilst increasing self esteem and wellbeing.”. - Limbless Association – Offers advice, peer support, and practical assistance for individuals adjusting to life after amputation to lead independent lives.
- REACH – A charity dedicated to children with upper limb differences, offering support to families and children to help them thrive.
These organisations play a key role in enhancing the quality of life for people with limb differences by offering emotional support, social inclusion opportunities, and guidance on navigating life post-amputation.
Recently, on social media, the show ‘Adolescence’ has been praised for helping to raise awareness for those with limb differences. One of the actors in the show has a limb difference and this is shown on screen simply as another character trait; it is not a plot point. Inclusion of limb differences in mainstream media can reduce stigma and raise awareness of these types of conditions.
