Reading Time: 2 minutes
On 28th February 2025, the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) are aiming to turn Yorkshire red!
Wear Red Day takes place in February each year and is a day dedicated raising awareness of heart disease. The CHSF are specifically raising awareness in respect of children with congenital heart defects, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, proper medical treatment and ongoing support to children and their families.
What is the CHSF?
The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund is a charity; it was set up in 1988 and for over 30 years it has been helping children with congenital heart disease and their families. It’s mission statement to provide support, reassurance and empowerment, recognising that caring for people with congenital heart disease is much more than just treating just the heart itself. Over the years, it has awarded over £10 million in grants to the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit and the region’s supporting hospitals.
What are Congenital Heart Defects?
Congenital heart defects affect around 1 in 100 babies and are among the most common birth defects. It refers to a malformation of the heart’s structure and can range from mild to severe. Many children with a congenital heart defect require surgery or medical intervention shortly after birth or later in life.
Some common types include:
- Valve defects where there is a problem with the heart valves which can affect blood flow.
- Cyanotic defects where oxygen in the blood is reduced and can cause a bluish tint to skin.
- Septal defects where there are holes in the walls that divide the chambers of the heart.
Congenital heart defects are often detected during pregnancy, birth or the early stages of a child’s life. Many children born with congenital heart defects can live healthy lives. It is crucial that early detection, intervention and careful monitoring is provided to ensure the best possible outcome for these children.
